Hands & Hearts: Drama and Puppet Ministry

Hands & Hearts: Drama and Puppet Ministry

Leaders:

Karla Pinkston and Marlon Wight

History (as told by Karla):

Back some years ago when Wesley (Marlon’s son, Karla’s nephew) was about 4 years old he would not take his medicines. Marlon had a tough time trying to keep him from fighting her everytime she tried to give him his meds. One day she came up with the idea of using a puppet. It worked! If the puppet took his meds, then Wesley would.

Some time after that, Puppet Productions held a seminar in Huntsville, AL.  So Marlon asked if I would go with her.  We went, and that’s where she bought our first puppet, Darwin.  She called me one day shortly thereafter and said, "you know I was thinking,”  which usually isn't good, “let's start a puppet ministry.”  I agreed, and so our journey began.

We started out in a small box with just the two of us. Soon the ministry grew to 5, then 8, then 10, then 13, and now there are 20 of us working for the Lord. He has been so good to us and has blessed us beyond anything we could have imagined. Not only do we share the love of Christ with puppets, we now serve him through interpretive dance, which we call our Drama Team.

What we do:

We start doing puppets in August and continue through December. During puppet season we travel to other churches or venues and do shows that share the message of Jesus along with some laughs and fun.  We also usually include some drama skits, songs, and black-light scenes. Puppet shows last around 35 - 40 minutes.  The Drama team starts in January and goes through May, and includes skits and interpretive dance moves set to songs that glorify God and exemplify Christian character.  Both divisions of our ministry work together and are usually performed whenever God provides us the opportunity.  Although being a part of this ministry requires hard work, time, and effort, it is also a lot of fun.  And the reward of God being glorified and seeing peoples’ lives changed and souls saved makes it all worthwhile!

How to join:

Simply have a love for God's people and talk to Karla or Marlon.  Practice is usually held each Sunday at 3:00 PM in the Education Building.  If you’re not much for performing, there is always work to be done in preparing for performances, setting up for performances, and tearing down after performances.  So ask how you can be a part of this great ministry.
